A Children’s Book about Going Green

Hey, it looks like you are new here! I like new visitors. Hopefully you like it here and subscribe RSS feed Thanks for visiting!

Attention:  Giveaway at the bottom of the post!

My son and daughter love books, like most children do. Every night we read a book before bed and most of the time it’s a dinosaur book or has to do with animals. My son loves trucks but usually the roaring T-Rex books wins. When William is going Green  by, Jame Martin II, arrived, oh, my! First let me point out, my son loves getting mail and with the numerous packages that arrive he’s beside himself when there’s something he can help review or look at.

We have read this book over and over because it’s so well liked in our home. The idea is that there is a garbage truck whose engine is old and pollutes. William, is the name of this garbage truck and he has to retire because he make too much pollution. He’s sad but ends up he getting a hybrid engine and paints his truck green, he’s saved! The story isn’t too detailed and for younger children it gives just the right amount of information. My son, however, asks all sorts of technical questions the book doesn’t explore in depth. Questions about pollution, recycling, the environment and what a hybrid is! When I explained hybrid in a four year old kinda way his response was, “Oh, the kinda car you a daddy were talking about?” He hears more than I think!

William is Going Green is a cute book and my family enjoys the message it sends, the illustrations and that it isn’t just about William but a series of books about greening trucks and vehicles. The book is written by a dad who was inspired by his youngest son and his love for trucks. I think this alone is inspiring and the fact that my son wants me to read about William over and over and asks so many though provoking questions…means thumbs up!

My education in early childhood and past preschool experience also compels me to recommend this for teachers. I remember searching for good books and lessons in April when I taught about Earth Day. There aren’t too many books out there too choose from but thankfully there are more and William the Garbage Truck & Crew is a series I would choose.

Green & Clean Mom is giving away THREE of these books to one lucky reader. To win, simply leave me a comment telling me why your child, grandchild or some little sweetie in your life might enjoy this book.  Three  winner’s will be randomly drawn July 18, 2008. I’ve already starting my son Gabriel into going green and he’s only 16 months old, I believe the earlier you introduce something to your child the more they will respect it and want to participate, we have been recycling and re-using things for craft projects , then we send them to friends/family as gifts! They love them! Also my son loves books and reading so this would be extra cool!

another good green book is “michael recycle” written by ellie bethel. someone gave it to my son for his birthday but i saw it at target the other day. it isn’t too long or detailed which is good for my kids (1 and 3 years old) but it talks about a town that is all polluted and full of garbage and the people clean it up and recycle/reuse and are so proud of their new “green and clean” town (and yes, they use that phrase in the book!!)
